Brighton Gasworks
Overview
Quod secured planning permission for the comprehensive redevelopment of Brighton Gasworks, a strategically important brownfield site in Brighton & Hove. Following a recovered appeal determined by the Secretary of State, the approved scheme will deliver 495 sustainable new homes, commercial floorspace supporting approximately 195 jobs, significant public realm improvements and biodiversity net gain, transforming a long-vacant site.

OUR ROLE
Quod has advised Berkeley Homes on Brighton Gasworks since 2019, leading the planning strategy from initial engagement through to appeal. Following the submission of a planning application in November 2023, Brighton & Hove City Council resolved to refuse permission in May 2024, contrary to officer recommendation. Quod coordinated the subsequent appeal and successfully secured planning permission through a recovered appeal determined by the Secretary of State. The decision enables the regeneration of a challenging brownfield site, delivering new homes, employment opportunities, enhanced public realm and measurable biodiversity benefits.
